Rutin is a rutinoside that is quercetin with the hydroxy group at position C-3 substituted with glucose and rhamnose sugar groups. It has a role as a metabolite and an antioxidant. It is a disaccharide derivative, a quercetin O-glucoside, a tetrahydroxyflavone and a rutinoside.

Rutin are found in the rind of green citrus fruits and in rose hips and black currants.

Rutin have been used in alternative medicine as an aid to enhance the action of vitamin C, to support blood circulation, as an antioxidant, and to treat allergies, viruses, or arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.

Rutin is a flavonoid glycoside that has been found in buckwheat and has diverse biological activities.1,2,3,4,5 It scavenges 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and ABTS radicals when used at a concentration of 163.79 μM, as well as inhibits iron autoxidation, in cell-free assays.1,2 Dietary administration of rutin reduces tumor growth and the number of lung metastases in a B16/F10 murine melanoma model. Rutin decreases intestinal acidity, increases intestinal activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase, and reduces intestinal levels of protein carbonyls and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances  formation in a rat model of intestinal toxicity induced by methotrexate. It also increases the time spent exploring the novel object in the novel object recognition test and increases recognition and discriminative indices in a rat model of short-term episodic memory deficits induced by scopolamine .
